Determine the location, construction material, water table and total depth of the well as these are important factors to know when servicing the well & pump. Which of the following common well types do you have?

Size Material Type
1 1/4" Galvanized Metal Pipe Shallow Well
1 1/2" Galvanized Metal Pipe Shallow Well
2" Galvanized Metal Pipe Shallow Well
1 1/4" Plastic PVC Pipe Shallow Well
1 1/2" Plastic PVC Pipe Shallow Well
2" Plastic PVC Pipe Shallow Well
4" Plastic PVC Pipe Shallow Well
2" Black Iron or Galvanized Metal Pipe Deep Well
4" Black Iron or Galvanized Metal Pipe Deep Well
2" Plastic PVC Pipe Deep Well
4" Plastic PVC Pipe Deep Well

Colors indicate the most common wells in this area.

Don't know which you have?
Follow these steps to make a determination:

FIND THE WELL: Locate the well head. This is the top of the well. Newer wells, those constructed in the 90's or later, should have the well head left above ground. You may need to dig to find the well head.

Is the well constructed of Plastic or Metal? Plastic PVC is white in color. Metal wells will have a black or silver look - you could use a magnet to further confirm if it is a metal well.

What size is the well? Wells are sized by the inside diameter of the pipe used to construct them.

The following chart will help you to determine what size well you have. You can wrap a string around the well and measure its length to find the circumference then compare to the chart:

Out. Circ. Well Size In. Dia. Out. Dia.
5 3/8" 1 1/4" 1 1/4" 1 5/8"
6 1/4" 1 1/2" 1 1/2" 1 7/8"
7 3/4" 2" 2" 2 3/8"
10 1/4" 3" 3" 3 1/2"
14 3/8" 4" 4" 4 1/2"
21 1/4" 6" 6" 6 5/8"

Is it a Deep or Shallow Well? The only way to truly know: is to open the well and drop a weighted line down the well. A well with a depth of less than 80' is a shallow or intermediate well. Wells measuring more than 80 feet in depth are deep wells. NOTE: If the well is opened - be sure to record the static water table. That is: make a note of the depth where the line "splashed" into the water.
